Half size slow feed hay nets about 20 pounds of hay depending on compression and type of hay.  So just a little over half of a 30-40 pound 2 string bale of hay.

Bags are approximately  36″ wide x 36″ deep

Paracord pull closure with cord lock comes standard –   If  you are hanging the net using the pull string, we recommend the rope upgrade.

1/4″ Rope Pull upgrade available (click link) -> Optional Rope Pull for our hay nets

These hay bags work great for horse trailers, shows, stalls, most horses & ponies

Available in all our stock materials

  • .75″ Heavy  Polypropylene – Black only -Ultra slow feed, use with caution, only for horses that are used to slow feed nets
  • 1″ Heavy Duty Polypropylene -Black only – (400+ pound break strength) Slow feeding for horses that have mastered larger meshes, ponies & Minis
  • 1.25″ Heavy Duty Polypropylene-Black only (400+ pound break strength).  Works for most horses
  • 1.75″ Heavy Duty Polypropylene -Black (600+ pound break strength).   Works for most horses
  • 2.25″ Heavy Duty Polypropylene – Black (600+ pound break strength).   Feeds easy – great starter net or for folks that are just trying to reduce waste from soiling
  • 3.00″ Heavy Duty Polypropylene – Black  (600+ pound break strength).  Free feeding for seniors and horses that you just want to reduce some of the hay waste

Please keep in mind the smaller the mesh the more abuse it will take from the horses teeth, this can cause premature wear on the nets if the horse is not picking the hay out but grabbing the net and shaking it or just ripping at the net. THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR CAN SUBSTANTIUALLY SHORTEN THE LIFE OF YOUR NET and generally shows the horse is not ready for that small of a hole.

I purchased two half bale hay nets with 1.25″ holes, and they are awesome! I love that they are soft and don’t have knots. The wide top makes them very easy to fill with hay. I will be ordering more soon!

I just ordered my second half bale hay net. They’re wonderful. My horses actually prefer to eat from the hay net than from loose hay. I have the 1.75 hole net, and it works perfectly. It not only slows down their eating, it keeps them occupied ! Wish I had tried these years ago.

I absolutely love this hay net. I have a horse that wolfs his hay down, and this really works to slow him down. This alleviates boredom, and keeps him from standing too long with nothing to eat. It also eliminates waste. This net is easy to use and extremely tough and durable. I highly recommend it.

I have been buying and using slow-feeder hay nets for many years – a lot of them, because my draft horses tear them up every couple of months! I recently happened upon a recommendation for Hay Burners bags, and ordered a couple to see if the extra cost would be worth it. It definitely is. They are constructed from a very high-quality, thick braided string, and the mesh goes all the way up to the closure so they can be cinched closed really tight. The cheaper versions tear under daily use and the opening allows the horses to snack from the top, completely defeating the whole purpose of small holes. I don’t use the toggle on the drawstring, I tie a square knot with the string looped so it ties tight but can be undone easily. These are fantastic quality and workmanship.

Like the new nets very much. Much softer material than the black stiff ones and fit nicely in a 30 gal pail. Just set the bag in, stuff and tie up. My very favorite nets tho were the first I ordered several years ago. Still holding up with 3 horses that are very hard on them. I would wash them periodically and they cleaned up well, held their shape and softness. Just started using my new nets and so far they are thumbs up!

I now have 4 of these nets. They hold a good amount of hay, and hold up very well to the horses and to the changing weather we have here in WV. I really like that they don’t have any knots which means less irritation to the horses mouth. I introduced hay nets to the horses about 3 years ago, have tried several brands and prefer these over all the others. The horses prefer to eat out of the nets than loose hay. Although I have nets that I hang, these I place in raised feeders my husband and I built. I use 2 locking carabiners, one on each side, then lay the net in the feeder on the side and fasten the carabiners to eye hooks in the floor of the feeder. It works great and keeps the horses in a more natural position for feeding. There is very little waste when using nets which is a big plus.

I love these hay nets! And extremely fast shipping. I bought my horse one in November and it is holding up very well. I purchased another one for my new horse and received it in 2 days. I love the high quality of the nets and recommend them to anyone and everyone!

I have reviewed these wonderful hay feeders before, but I am currently on my third order! I can’t say enough about the quality of these slow feeder bags. They are extremely durable, easy to use, and they do exactly what they say: they slow down a horse’s eating which has health benefits and relieves boredom. I love them!!

These hay bags are extremely durable and very well made. I would rate them 5 stars except it’s almost impossible to fit half a bale in them and I feel my square bales are on the smaller side. If they weren’t a pain to fill, I’d recommend them to everyone!

Thank you for your feedback – If you find you need something a little larger we can make something custom for you fairly quickly. Hay bales in general vary in size depending on where in the country they are made.

These are very nice quality hay nets. They hold alot of hay, are soft on the mouth, and work well with wetted hay. I feed large bladed Bermuda grass hay. If the hay is brittle, I wet it so it doesn’t break apart while horses pull it through the squares. The 1.25” squares slow my large muzzled, good eating mare without discouraging her. The thinner twine on these nets help with that. An almost filled net stuffed with Bermuda pulled from a roll lasts this eating machine mare 3 hrs. The 1.75” squared nets have fatter twine. My less aggressive eating horses do very well with them without getting discouraged. To fill nets easily, I clip left and right sides to snaps on a wall, pull open and load. Closure cord is sufficiently strong. I would recommend.

The Half Size Hay bags are large enough to hold plenty of hay for a cold winter night in my part of the country. I always break apart flakes because of “interesting” things I’ve found in my hay. The nylon mesh used in the nets is the best for my small overweight mare for two reasons. First, the 1 ¼ inch holes are just right: not too big to allow gobbling, not too small to cause frustration. Second, the material is soft and non-abrasive, an important factor for horses fed out of nets for many years. I will gladly pay a premium for nylon mesh hay bags.

My mare foundered last year. Having to cut her food way back she was in a panic. These nets are lifesavers literally! She now eats her 10 pounds of hay in about 10 hours and never panics about missing a meal any more. I refill twice a day. Thank you Hayburners. They are very durable as well!

The bag does not turn into a tear-shaped bag when it is hung. This is huge. The way the bag is sewn together seems to control how it hangs. Plus the bag is thick netting which I am sure helps. I bought one bag, then turned around and bought two more, and then ended up buying two more on top of that. Highly recommend slow feed bag!

I haven’t had it long, but it seems to be a well-made hay net and it’s very easy to load. The 1″ hole size is perfect for my piggy mare. The only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars from me is the drawstring. It feels flimsy, and when I went back to read how to hang it apparently I was supposed to pay extra for a rope drawstring. To me, this is something that should be included on the net from the get-go. It’s not super easy to hang with a carabiner clip and I know I can’t hang it from the drawstring. I shouldn’t have to purchase something extra for basic functionality. Other than that, very pleased with the net as long as it holds up!

These are the only hay bags I use on my farm at this point, I absolutely love them. I now have 9 and I use all of them every single day for four horses. They don’t break, I’ve had some of them for months now and they’ve barely even frayed despite constant use. They are also easier to fill than a lot of other hay bags I’ve used, that hay just slides right in. The horses seem to like them as well because there are no knots which limits irritation on their gum lines.

  31. Kathleen (verified owner)

We love the net itself. The only problem we have is with the cord to close the bag up. I wish it was thicker cord to close the bag. The plastic closer does not seem to keep the bag closed well enough. Otherwise the bag works great and slows our fast eaters down.

We do have a rope option for the pull strings if a customer wishes to have a heavier draw cord. We do suggest a small slip knot after the cordlock to lock the bag closed. Thank you

  32. Sandra (verified owner)

These are perfect – I ordered it with the rope pull (which I recommend), and it’s easy to fill (the opening is much larger and less fiddly than in a typical hay bag) and easy to hang. Best of all, my horses really like it.

These are fantastic! I have been trying a variety of hay bags for a couple of years. Most of them were not only hard to fill, fought hold as much and they also were rough to feel and holes soon showed up. These are great – they hold a lot if hay, are easy to fill and soft to the hand. My horses are happy and so am I!

This bag is the Cadillac of hay nets. It is soft to the touch but wears like iron. My Morgan has torn through other brands in hours. We’ve had this about two months and its as good as new. It’s super easy to load which really makes it a pleasure for me. So, great for me. Great for my horse. I’ve never come across a better slow feeder in more than 35 years owing horses.

I was incredibly excited when I pulled them out of the box and saw how large the opening at the top of the net was. It’s way easier to stuff than my current nets so I find I am using these the most. Recently it rained and then froze and the nets got a little stiff, but overall not bad and certainly still usable. If I had any suggestion for change, it would be a more robust pull string.

I’m using this size to keep grass hay in front of her 24/7. She’s a very aggressive eater and hard on all her nets so I went with the heavy netting and the 3/4″ holes finally slowed her down. She is still of the attitude, “Challenge Accepted,” but the 3/4″ holes are working.

I LOVE these bags! They are softer than other haybags I’ve purchased and they LAST! My horses will easily destroy 2 or 3 of the other hay bags but not theses ones. They are pricey but I will change all my horses over to theses bags as I can afford it, I am starting with my most aggressive eaters who do the most damage to the bags. Can’t say it enough, these haybags are well worth the $

I have been a Hay Burners customer for years! I started my easy keeper mare’s hay bag journey with them in 2016 and have always been impressed with their products’ quality and the personal attention Laurie gave to my needs. I have NEVER had to throw away a bag, though I have rehomed my original bags as my mare became wise to pulling the hay out faster through the larger size openings (she is now eating from 3/4″ openings) and it is perfect. I have a stash of 16 half bale size bags, which allows me to prep for 4 days at a time, at 4 bags a day. What a time saver as her hay needs to be weighed! There is no waste, no hay blowing out into the paddock, and I know exactly what she has eaten. If you have a horse that needs a slow feeder, these are perfect – soft, no knots, easy to hang, machine washable (I pick out any leftover hay and put them in a zippered mesh laundry, they come out looking like new!!) and no damage to your horse’s teeth!! Great product – Thanks!!

The bag is really nice but the rope is too thin and the locking thing much smaller than the other bags I have gotten in the past. Guess I should have ordered extra long rope – would have been thicker and heavy duty lock pull.

Very pleased with this product, it can fit more than 15 pounds of hay with plenty of room so the horse isn’t grating against the bag and ruining the holes. The bag is really heavy duty weighing in at a little over 2 pounds and well made so hopefully I won’t have to replace for a long time! Worth the money instead of buying the cheap 10$ bags every 2 months. I love that the bag comes with a tightening lock so they can’t eat out of the top. Hopefully the bag won’t retain too much water when the wet weather comes.

I got the light duty 3/4 inch half bale net for my over weight spotted saddle horse gelding. He had mastered the 1 inch nets I have and was cheating through the top where the holes are bigger. This one I have clipped to a ring between 2 rubber mats with a twine break away. Works great! Luckily he has never chewed a hole in a net. These should work for years. He had no problems going from the 1 inch slow net to the 3/4 inch hay burners net. Love how easy they are to fill as well. A client of mine has 2 hay burner netsi they have had for 3 years used daily on the ground. They are the heavy duty ones and still in working shape. When the 3/4 inch heavy duty net material is in I might get a couple more so I can feed 3 meals a day with profiled nets. My horse has lost 150 lbs on the weight tape since April when I started weighing his food and using the net when I brought him home. He is looking spectacular now and has more energy and his feet aren’t so sore. He is also on a low NSC ration balancer and ground flax, Benonite clay and Redmond mineral salt. Feet look great too.

Very well made – strong, soft weave. Glad I got the 1.5 since our hay is long stemmed. Slows them down better than our inexpensive nets with 2″ holes – and will definitely last longer. We are soaking the hay currently, and this bag works very well for that.

Best hay nets that I have used. Last over 6 months with no sign of damage. Used daily by 13 horses.

These hay bags are amazing. We have 4 horses that all have different appetites and this balances the time eating fairly evenly. It allows us to put hay out for a laminitic 3 year old that is a hay bully, a 7 yo pony, a 4 yo growing quarter horse and a 15 year old Cushings mare all in the same paddock! I don’t even have to go into how durable they are as well, with no raw snouts from the net (no rough nylon knots that rub raw spots on the nose)! We also have these for trailering. An overall great product.

Holds plenty of hay. Wide mouth makes it easy to fill. Soft but durable netting. I bought this after two other hay burner nets I bought held up with no tears at all after more than a year .

I purchased 3 of the half bags in 3/4″ netting once it was back in stock in September. My gelding is your typical ‘lips=opposable thumbs’ Haflinger and food motivation is the name of the game with him. He has several nets with 1″ holes, but I like trying to extend his feeding time as long as possible during those dark hours of the night when I’m not there. The material of the Hayburners’ half bag is awesome! Even when it’s not completely full, he’s able to eat (slowly and steadily!) and he doesn’t get frustrated. Thumbs up from me!

I hate having to stuff, so love these strong and durable nets which are big enough that I can easily slide in 3 big flakes, one at a time, like slipping a letter into an envelope. Plenty of room for more if you want to top it off. I have two of these for those subzero days when I’d rather watch the horses from my phone from the warmth of my house than be out there in howling winds stuffing hay nets. The most durable nets I have found.

I really like these half bale size bags so I recently bought 2 more. They have a wider opening so are easier to drop 4 heavy flakes of hay into. I am starting my second winter with my first hay burner bags and can hardly tell the old ones from these nice new ones. That’s how durable they are.

I absolutely love the quality and honesty of this hay bag. The opening measurements are true and the woven material is super tough and of great quality. The draw string at top is brilliant (I have the rope and my friend has the cord) and the barn staff have no problems filling either bag. In fact, they request it! Highly recommend!

I purchased the 1.25” Hay net to slow down a very skilled eater. The quality of the net is the best of any brand I have seen and the barn staff requests this brand of net because of its size and ease to fill.

Love these! I fold these over a tub making it super easy to load hay. They hold quite a bit of hay. I love that there’s no knots. I bought the bigger strings so I can either hang it or throw it in the ground (my horses are barefoot). I’m going to order more and replace all my other nets.

I love this hay bag. After trying too many hay nets to count I finally found one that works for both my horses. It’s just the right size and the 3.5″ holes are just right too. I like that there are no knots and the material is soft. I highly recommend Hay Burners nets. So glad I went with the rope pull, it works great.

I loved this product so much, I bought two more! They’re affordable, easy to fill with large openings, and knotless (which is kinder to the horses teeth and gums). I’m going to buy more to replace my knotted ones.

It’s the perfect size for overnight hay amount of 6 flakes. It’s soft on Sadie’s mouth and she hasn’t chewed any of the netting like thinner netted ones. The barn employee likes the wide opening for easy loading.

Hayburner nets are the best! they are durable and I love the big heavy duty lock thing:). I always upgrade the rope as I hang them mostly. This size is perfect for feeding 15-20lbs hay ( will hold much more, but I weigh each feeding)
They really do a good job slowing my horses down.

What I love most about Hay Burners is the softness of the material. It really matters on their gums, lips, teeth. And they’re durable. I’ve not had one tear or any noticeable wear in two years of daily use. Other brand types I tried are no longer in use at my barn. ONLY Hay Burners.

I went from a 2″ net to a 1-1/4 ” net to help my mare lose some weight. She is recently diagnosed with Insulin Resistance so the vet said to cut back on her alfalfa a bit. The first day I put this bag out during the day so I could observe her adapting to a smaller size net, but she did just fine. I was able to hang this using the standard cord it comes with onto my foldable frame. I load it with 3 flakes of alfalfa (which I am now spraying down). I put the first flake of wet alfalfa into the bag shaking it into the corners of the bag bottom to get the hay dispersed well into the bag. 2 more flakes fit easily on top and I could put 2 more in if I wanted to. The 3 flakes lasts the 10-11 hour restricted to dry lot time. She is ready for her muzzle and grass after her morning feeding.

The material the hay net is made with is terrific. I bought this hay net to put on a wall feeder. The top fits the frame but the net compacts all the hay at the bottom and my horse cannot pull it out because it is way to tight.

These hay nets perfectly fit in a large Fortiflex tub filled with 1-2 flakes of hay, and I put them in the stalls pre-filled, which means horses can eat in the head-down grazing position rather than pulling from hay bags attached higher on the wall. Got the optional string add on and highly recommend.
